Twig Gets Woodworm : 2010-11-03
Woodworm, the leading UK cricket brand, has announced a new sponsorship agreement with Chris Tremlett, the England Ashes bowler nicknamed Twiggy.
Surrey paceman Tremlett will wear the company’s equipment and wield an iconic Woodworm bat in the forthcoming test series against Australia – and during next year’s domestic season – after agreeing a year-long deal.
The strapping 6ft 7ins player earned his place in this Winter’s England touring side with an excellent 2010 season, in which he claimed 48 first class wickets at an average of just 20.18, finishing 11th in the LV County Championship averages.
With a season’s best 53 not out, he’s also useful with the bat and will be looking to emulate Graham Onions’ test batting heroics with his ‘worm’ – the Durham bowler twice fought an incredible double rearguard action in last winter’s tour of South Africa, helping England to a series draw.
Announcing the sponsorship on the eve of the Ashes Tour, Simon Millington, Woodworm CEO, said: “Chris is a terrific cricketer who has been incredibly unlucky with injuries at times when his test career looked set to flourish.
“He deserves a place on the England Ashes squad and his height and pace will be an asset on the hard, bouncy pitches in Australia.
“He’s a decent batsman to have in the tail as well – and if he lives up to the standard that Graham set in South Africa, then Woodworm will have another hero in the England team.”
Tremlett, the son of Tim Tremlett, the former Hampshire seamer, and the grandson of Maurice, who played for Somerset and England in the 1940s and 50s, made his test debut in 2007 against India at Lord’s, in a memorable win.
He troubled the lauded Indian batting line-up with uncomfortable bounce and lively pace and looked set to be a key man for the future until injury struck. After missing the 2007-08 winter tours he was included in England’s ODI squad to face Scotland but a heel injury ended his hopes.
After a frustrating 2009 season, where he played seven Championship matches, he left Hampshire for Surrey, where he enjoyed a superb season last time out.
